Liquid Prisoner is the latest book from prolific American poet Paul Vangelisti. In this collection of 77 sonnets each poem is a response to the even-numbered poems of Shakespeare. The title comes from a line in Shakespeare's 5th sonnet, "A liquid prisoner pent in walls of glass." Vangelisti sees each of the original sonnets as dramatic scenes, and his reflections often rely on the Great American Songbook. With a dreamed-up reconfigured rhyme scheme, Vangelisti invigorates an old form in an entirely new way.
